GTA 6 Developers Say GTA 5 Realism Was Already Outdated 13 Years Ago

According to GamesRadar+, Rockstar North studio head Rob Nelson recently spoke to Edge magazine about how the team approached Grand Theft Auto VI after spending more than a decade building and refining GTA V. The interview reveals that GTA V's realism was already considered dated when it launched 13 years ago, and that the leap in technology between the two games forced developers to rethink what they could 'get away with.'

Nelson reportedly told Edge that as world resolution increases, developers can no longer rely on old tricks. In GTA V, players could pull out an automatic shotgun in front of a pedestrian and get little or no reaction. In GTA VI's more detailed world, that kind of behavior breaks believability. Nelson explained that if a pedestrian population is meant to behave believably, standing in front of them and producing a weapon without any response simply doesn't work anymore.

The same principle applies to pacing. Running GTA VI's world at GTA V's timings reportedly made everything feel 'too fast' for the level of graphical fidelity Rockstar was aiming for. The team had to adjust animation, AI, and world-building so that the game's characters and physics matched its visual ambition.

Why this matters for players

For browser and family gaming audiences, this is a useful reminder that open-world games are built around small, invisible systems that decide how alive a world feels. When developers push graphics forward, they also have to push behavior, reactions, and pacing. It is not just about prettier pictures; it is about making worlds that respond to players in believable ways.

The Edge interview, as reported by GamesRadar+, focuses on development philosophy rather than release plans. The main takeaway from the interview is that even a hugely successful game like GTA V could not set the template for its sequel.

As Nelson put it, the higher the resolution of the world, the more things developers cannot get away with. That seems to be the central challenge behind GTA VI, and it explains why Rockstar spent so long making sure the new game feels right.
